Our method
Our firm of art experts is at the service of auctioneers in France and in Europe. Our vocation is to reveal the meaning and value of an Old Master Painting.
Thanks to analyses, publications, and the keeping abreast of the regular discoveries of art historians, we are able to meet our legal obligations.
By mobilizing our experience and all the necessary resources, our team does everything possible to attribute a name, a history and an estimate to your paintings. Our experts - in permanent contact with the best researchers - deploy all the necessary means to appraise your painting in the light of current knowledge.
The history of art and the work of the expert that results from it, are human sciences and not exact sciences, with their uncertainties and their subjectivity. The attribution of a work to a painter is not objective; it is the result of a consensus between art historians and professionals of the art market. It is precisely our role as experts in paintings to do everything possible to bring together this consensus and thus allow the assured presentation of a work to the market. Through this combination of historical, stylistic, technical and scientific analysis, which is the essence of attributions and appraisals, we reveal the value of these paintings and defend their place in both the history of art and on the market.
We are independent
We believe that our independence upholds our reputation. The defence of the works is our only marketing strategy. This permanent assertion of independence allows us to work with complete objectivity and to ensure protection for you and your clients, but also for the buyer who benefits from the best possible conditions for acquisition.
We strive for excellence
By choosing us, the auction houses guarantees their sellers a high quality customized service while adhering to the legal system of their country. As for buyers, they are reassured by the name of a recognized house. With us, auction houses benefit from the exposure of the paintings to a prestigious international clientele, who is well-informed and confident in our method.
To accomplish our mission, we have developed a method.
Our method
Teamwork is the foundation. Each member of the team has his or her own experience, insight and knowledge; it is the combination of these very diverse skills that sustains our success. This collegial environment makes it possible to fine-tune an opinion, to temper an idea, or on the contrary to validate, flesh out and complete a hypothesis.
The Meeting of Minds
During a weekly meeting, the "sorting", all the paintings that have been received for appraisal are examined by the experts, the researchers and various specialists. We are interested in each of the works entrusted to us, regardless of their condition and history. They are all observed and analysed according to the intuitions of each of us. While the colours speak to one, the drawing attracts the eye of another, the technique strikes a third. It is this crisscrossing of viewpoints that allows for the best analysis. Art history being a human science, we listen to everyone’s impressions and opinions.
Documentation and research
In order to appreciate all the subtlety and to understand the history of each of the works, a researcher gathers all the bibliographic and iconographic elements relating to the paintings presented. To do this, we consult the office's private documentation, which is extremely extensive, containing fifteen thousand books, photographs, and thousands of sales catalogues and periodicals. The exceptional collection of more than 500,000 records, currently being digitized, continues to grow daily and constitutes one of our most precious assets. On the lookout for the smallest trace, the slightest proof, we conduct true investigations, the result of which will be the final attribution.
Consultation with specialists
We systematically invite prestigious consultants, researchers or former curators to participate in this weekly meeting in order to enrich our vision of the work and to compare opinions. After this first collegial analysis, the investigation continues: our firm often calls upon international specialists of each school, each period, each artist. Their opinion constantly enriches our knowledge of the works and helps us to perfect our expertise in Old Master Paintings and refine our estimate. This relationship of trust and mutual exchange, strengthened for decades, gives us access to great specialists and their wealth of knowledge.
Scientific analysis
In a second step, when necessary, the scientific analysis, physical or chemical, is used to confirm or contradict the intuition of researchers and experts. We do not hesitate to use X-ray or spectrograph on a painting for the needs of attribution and valuation. The case of The Virgin and Child Enthroned by the Master of Vissy-Brod is a good example of this, since our decision to have it X-rayed to confirm our intuition revealed the important black repaint added in the 18th or 19th century around the figures. This overpainting obscured an important and spectacular architectural feature in the original composition, now perfectly brought to light by the restorers at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. These technical analyses and the comparisons between similar works organized by our firm are detailed in the auction catalogue.
Drafting and translation of catalogues
The drafting of the sale catalogue is a key element of the auction. This catalogue, distributed in digital and/or printed version, includes the whole of our work as experts. The painting is then described either as being by the artist's hand, or attributed to the artist, artist's entourage, follower of the artist, or in the artist's style. These precise denominations are our responsibility and legally binding. The catalogue develops the artist's biography, describes the context of the work's production, the personality of the person who commissioned it or of the successive collectors, proposes comparisons with other paintings, provides information on possible preparatory drawings and presents, if necessary, the results of scientific analyses. Illustrated with high-definition photographs, it offers buyers a maximum of information.
For sales of important works, the catalogue is translated into English in order to reach an even broader audience.
The distribution and promotion of the works to an international clientele
Once the painting's description has been drawn up and the catalogue finalized, we send the information to our clients and contacts, in France and abroad, depending on the nature of the work. Buyers and collectors rely on the advice of our experts who are familiar with their tastes and interests. It is due to this trust that paintings are sold for several million euros without having been viewed in person, such as the Portrait de philosophe by Jusepe de Ribera sold on 16 June 2020 by the Daguerre auction house in Paris, without either the buyer or the under bidder having examined it in person.
Accompanying the painting up to and after the auction
Our work as experts does not stop with the distribution of the catalogue. We accompany the painting and the auctioneer through to the auction. Firstly, we respond to all requests for condition reports from our clients or from the auction house with the seriousness and precision for which we are known. We also provide additional photos whenever necessary.
Our experts are present at the public exhibitions that precede the sale in order to best provide additional information to potential bidders. They also participate in the sale to announce and comment on the works. After the sale, we can direct the buyers when asked towards trusted restorers, framers, shippers and insurers.
We are prospectors for gold. I get as much pleasure from finding a small Dutch master as I do from discovering a Caravaggio. Eric Turquin

Our Network
Our Extensive Network
Our firm regularly calls upon the best independent specialists, thus guaranteeing our name as experts. Our contacts have grown over the years, thanks to the experience of our founder, Eric Turquin, who worked for ten years in London and for the last thirty-five years on the rue Sainte-Anne. Frequent travel has allowed us to meet with specialists from all over the world. We are in contact with curators, heads of international museum collections and restorers from the greatest museums on a daily basis.
We collaborate even more regularly with three art historians: Marianne Lonjon, our specialist in Italian and European primitives, Pascale Pavageau, a specialist in 19th century paintings, and Jean-Pierre Cuzin, an important museum curator and probably one of the best "eyes" in Paris.
We also choose to seek out the skills, photography, transport, promotion..., with trusted companies that can accompany a painting until its sale and thus offer a personalized, high quality service. These loyal partners, with whom we work in close collaboration, guarantee our independence and contribute to our strength as experts. In addition to the meetings between these different professionals of the art world, our office also welcomes a wide range of auction houses, each one bringing its own experience of the market and of paintings. We give them access to the international market, putting smaller or regional auction houses on an equal footing with the larger ones. We work with them to develop a policy of enhancing the value of the works, with our long-standing collaborators, always giving priority to direct contact with clients and remaining within French law. With the Internet, the auction world and the art market has been profoundly changed. Through work well done, our role is the correct identification of the painting and good communication, ensuring that a painting can be sold anywhere at almost any time.
Many Contemporary Art enthusiasts are now interested in Old Master Paintings. Eric Turquin, himself a contemporary art enthusiast in his youth, brings these two worlds together, as he did with a painting by Caravaggio, exhibited prior to its sale in the Kamel Mennour gallery, one of the most active players in the contemporary art world. This meeting between the works of Daniel Buren and Caravaggio, organized by Kamel Mennour himself, gave rise to a sensational mirror installation, creating a connection between art separated by several centuries.
The greatest artists, such as Caravaggio, are universal and timeless, as is Fragonard, whose Philosophe lisant also garnered great interest among contemporary art lovers when it was discovered and sold on 26 June 2021 by Maître Petit in Epernay.
