About

The office

Including more than 15,000 books, periodicals, and sales catalogues, and with over 500,000 meticulously organised photographs, some dating from the 1920s, our vast library and archive are at the disposal of a team of three experts, two researchers, and, of course, our interns. Each year we answer approximately 10,000 requests for expertise. Most requests are resolved simply by viewing and researching photographs of the paintings; however, every year between 3,000 and 5,000 works are brought into our office, where they receive a physical inspection and the writing of their own catalogue entry.

Our research centre serves more than 300 auction houses throughout France and abroad (including Balclis in Barcalona, Beurret und Bailly in Basel and Zürich, l’Hôtel des Ventes de Mosan in Liège, l’Hôtel des Ventes de Monte-Carlo in Monaco, Legia Auction in Hannut, Stockholm Auktionsverk in Stockholm, or Iégor-Hôtel des Encans in Montreal).

Our strength lies in our collaborative and collegial approach: each week our experts pool their knowledge in a specially assigned meeting where they study and analyse the paintings recently brought into the office. This weekly meeting is attended by prestigious consultants: specialists, researchers, and former museum curators. Our field stretches from the gold grounds to the 19th century.

The experts

  • After a master’s degree in private law, and with the prestigious title of “alumnus of the École du Louvre”, Eric Turquin passed the professional examination for auctioneering in 1977. Between 1977 and 1979, he undertook an internship with Paul Touzet, the leading Parisian expert in Old Master paintings. Recruited by Sotheby’s, he lived in London from 1979 to 1987, working in the Old Master Paintings department, first as a cataloguer, then as an expert, and finally as head of the department. Since September 1987, he has been based in Paris as an independent expert and was made a member of the Syndicat Français des Experts Professionels in 1990 (http://www.sfep-experts.com/). He works for Tajan, PIASA, Artcurial, and most major Parisian and provincial auctioneer’s offices, as well as with international auction houses as an expert in Old Master paintings.

In September 2007, he placed his knowledge and experience at the service of Cabinet Turquin, where he handles the firm’s international clients (including Balclis in Barcalona, Beurret und Bailly in Basel and Zürich, l’Hôtel des Ventes de Mosan in Liège, l’Hôtel des ventes in Monaco, Legia Auction in Hannut, Stockholm Auktionsverk in Stockholm, and Iégor-Hôtel des Encans in Montreal). In September 2010, he was made a member of Syndicat Français des Experts Professionels (http://www.sfep-experts.com/).
